Digging Too Deep
🛑 Stop Starting ✅ Start Finishing
When a project gets underway and you start lifting the lid on processes and systems to make a change, questions and suggestions pop up: why didn't we ever get to the bottom of that issue? Should we fix it now? What do all these different reports do? Should we map them all out?
If you don't exercise discipline, you'll find yourself digging away at a deeper and deeper hole, without ever getting anything done - often losing sight of where you were trying to get to in the first place.
How can you avoid this? Set the scope for your project and stick to it!
⬅️ Free-range analysis and research should be done *before* you start a project
🛤️ Set specific guardrails: objectives and outcomes; budget and timescale; the processes, systems, and teams involved
🤔 Evaluate emerging issues: are they in scope? Will dealing with them directly help to achieve your stated outcomes? No? Then park them* ->
📋 But don't lose them - interesting questions or problems should be captured in a backlog to inform future projects or phases
